(Tallahassee, FL) On a chilly evening here at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, the Florida State Seminoles defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 88-77. While the Seminoles won by double-digits, the game felt closer than it actually was, as Georgia Tech was feisty and hung around in the second half.
At the end of the first half, the Seminoles led Georgia Tech by a score of 50-36. Florida State was down 4-2 with 18:46 in the first half but then they went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. They would lead for the rest of the game. The only area they really struggled was rebounding as it seemed like Georgia Tech had more energy and hustled more to get the rebounds.
Florida State was led by guard Terance Mann, who led all scorers with 21 points in the first half. He shot 7-7 from the field and was 7-8 at the free throw line. Mann also led the Seminoles in rebounds and assists with four of each. Forward Phil Cofer added 12 points and was the second-leading scorer in the half.
Georgia Tech was led by guard Josh Okogie, who was tied for the team lead in points in the first half with nine points. Okogie also led all rebounders with seven in the first half. Fellow forward Abdoulaye Gueye also added nine points.
In the second half, Georgia Tech came out with much more energy than Florida State did and it showed with an early 5-0 run. Shortly after that, the Seminoles called a timeout to regroup and get their energy back. Throughout the second half, whenever Florida State would make a big shot or have a big play, Georgia Tech would hustle down the court and respond with a shot of their own. Georgia Tech was able to cut Florida State’s lead to five or six at various points, but the Seminoles were able to survive the onslaught and then go on small runs of their own.
Florida State was led by Mann, who Georgia Tech had no defensive answer for in the first half and in the second half, they guarded him much closer, but he was still able to score and get his teammates involved. Mann led all scorers with 30 points and led the Seminoles in rebounds and assists with five apiece. The 30 points were a career-high for Mann. Guard Braian Angola added 19 points, going 3-6 from the three-point line and made some clutch shots in key moments when Georgia Tech was trying to make a comeback.
Georgia Tech had four players score in double-digits and were led by guard Jose Alvarado, who finished with 23 points. Okogie had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Those 16 boards led all rebounders. Gueye and center Ben Lammers also contributed with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Florida State will get a much needed few days off as their next game is on January 27th against the University of Miami Hurricanes at 4 PM EST here at the Tucker Civic Center. Miami is a very tough opponent, and they’re coming off of a 78-75 victory over Louisville. Georgia Tech will return home to the McCamrish Pavilion to face off against the Clemson Tigers on January 28th.
